The Asian Intensive Reader of Pneumoconiosis Project (AIR Pneumo) has been established with an aim to upgrade skills of specialists in developing countries on the application of the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses and to contribute to the implementation of the ILO/WHO Global Program for Elimination of Silicosis (GPES).

What is AIR Pneumo?

Purpose

AIR Pneumo is a non-governmental effort for quality assurance of medical screening for pneumoconioses. The project has started since sincere dialogue between a Thai governmental officer and Professor Yukinori Kusaka on setting up Asian Certification for Pneumoconioses in 2003. Famous US NIOSH B reader is a national certification which is also open to international physicians.

What does AIR Pneumo do?

AIR Pneumo educates physicians who are involved in the medical screening and surveillance for the pneumoconioses. The tools AIR Pneumo uses for education are 1) interactive 2 and half days' course including view box reading practice, 2) teaching materials using real chest radiographs, and 3) the 60-film reading examination and certification of proficiency of reading chest radiograph of pneumoconiosis. We believe this approach will help to assure quality of medical screening of pneumoconiosis in Asian countries.

What will be achieved?

Through the AIR Pneumo project, quality of the medical screening and health surveillance will be improved.

Who should attend the AIR Pneumo?

As the AIR Pneumo educates physicians who are involved in the medical screening and surveillance for the pneumoconioses, any chest physicians, radiologists, occupational physician, and general practitioners who are interested in occupational lung diseases should attend the AIR Pneumo course.
